When Panama split from Colombia in 1903, it lacked a stabilized currency and its own national mint. At that time Panama and the U.S. signed a monetary agreement that officially "dollarized" Panama. The Panamanian Balboa was pegged at a strict 1:1 ratio with the U.S. dollar. Under this partnership, the U.S. Mint took on manufacturing responsibility. The 1947 1 Balboa was produced using the exact same 90% silver planchets, dimensions and weight standards used for American silver dollars.
