Among 90-some different circulation issues in the lengthy Morgan series, only five had mintages lower than 350,000. With a total circulation mintage of just 330,846, this 1899 Philadelphia (no mintmark) issue had the second lowest production by the principal mint in the Morgan series. That was just 4% of the following year's Philadelphia output. Vastly fewer were struck in 1899 due to the mint's commitments to strike other denominations. Because circulated specimens of this issue are extremely scarce, Brilliant Uncirculated quality is all the more prized for this elusive date.
