There were a variety of changes to the Indian Head cent early in the series. This trio includes one of each of the first three types. The inaugural coin was copper-nickel and actually called a nickel because at the time, it was the only coin with nickel content used in American commerce. The laurel wreath reverse was a unique one-year engraving only found on that 1859 cent. The 1863 coin in this trio is also copper-nickel but features the wreath with shield reverse that became the series standard. The Indian Head cent's composition was altered a few years later due to the Civil War; subsequent pennies like the 1865 issue were struck in bronze alloy. Good quality retaining all major designs.
