Product Description
Our six-coin Indian Head penny set includes the original 1859-1864 copper-nickel issues in the series. Introduced in 1859, these pennies were actually known as 'nickels' or 'white cents' because of their copper-nickel composition. (Until 1857, U.S. cents had been struck in 100% copper.) Engraved on the obverse is Lady Liberty wearing an Indian headdress. On the reverse, two designs were featured; a one-year-only laurel wreath in 1859 and from 1860 on an oak wreath with shield.
