1880 Morgan Silver Dollar VF: In 1880 the Philadelphia Mint produced the lion's share of the year's Morgans, striking 12.6 million specimens. As the U.S. Mint churned out huge numbers of silver dollars during the 1880s, large portions landed in storage and would later be melted. After melts, attrition and the passage of over 14 decades, about 2% of Philadelphia's original 1880 output may be extant in mint-state grades. This puts added collecting pressure on Very Fine specimens such as these.
1926-S Peace Silver Dollar VF: In the mid-1920s, Peace dollar production fell significantly as the quota set by Congress neared. By 1926, San Francisco's output of just 6.9 million Peace silver dollars was a drastic reduction – about 40% less – than its first year 1922 mintage. Now, a full century after they were first struck, as little as 1% of 1926's original business strikes may be extant in mint-state condition. Average BU specimens sell for $325.
