The 1978 six coin proof set was the final regular U.S. proof set to include a traditional-size dollar coin, as the last 1978 Eisenhower dollar proof was issued only as part of this set. And it was one of the first San Francisco Mint proof sets to feature beautiful frosted engravings contrasted with mirror backgrounds. While the 3.4 million proof sets produced in 1985 may seem like a lot, many were later harvested for individual issues, leaving far fewer intact today. In 1997, the U.S. Mint issued just 1,975,000 proof sets. That year proved to be the second-lowest regular proof set production in four decades.
