1978, 1987 & 1997 Proof Set Trio – The 1978 six coin proof set was the final regular U.S. proof set to include a traditional-size dollar coin, as the last 1978 Eisenhower dollar proof was issued only as part of this set. And it was one of the first San Francisco Mint proof sets to feature beautiful frosted engravings contrasted with mirror backgrounds. While the 3.4 million proof sets produced in 1985 may seem like a lot, many were later harvested for individual issues, leaving far fewer intact today. In 1997, the U.S. Mint issued just 1,975,000 proof sets. That year proved to be the second-lowest regular proof set production in four decades.

1977, 1981 & 1990 Mint Set Trio – Home of the second-to-last Ike dollars, just two million 12-coin mint sets were produced in 1977, far fewer than the matching date proof set. The big 13-coin 1981 mint set contains three Susan B. Anthony dollars. The Treasury decided not to follow through on the three planned circulation mintages for the dollar, which meant that the SBA coins were issued in Brilliant Uncirculated quality only in the 1981 mint set. The 10-coin 1990 mint set had a final output of 1.8 million, but far fewer remain intact today.
