1998 Proof & Mint Set Pair: These 1998 proof and mint sets were the last to include the five traditional denominations before they were expanded to accommodate the State Quarter series in 1999. The proof set's relatively skimpy output of 2,086,507 is far less than any issued from 1961 to 1995. Likewise, the 1.2 million uncirculated sets produced in 1998 fell below some earlier 10-coin issues that retail for the same regular price or more. Included are specially minted BU specimens of both Philadelphia and Denver cents, nickels, dimes, quarters and half dollars.
1999 proof & Mint set Pair: The enormously popular State Quarter series began in 1999 with five commemorative issues honoring Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut. These important new quarters would also be included in the year's collector's sets; now with nine and 18 coins respectively, the 1999 proof and mint sets became the largest of any contemporary issue. Today these sets are sought-after by collectors thanks to their status as the first to contain the landmark quarter series.
