These fascinating pieces of 19th-century American history served as sentimental keepsakes or "courting coins" during the Victorian era. Created from an authentic Seated Liberty or Barber silver dime, the coins were purposefully altered by an artisan. The reverse side of the coin was sanded flat and hand-engraved with intricate monograms, initials, dates or symbols. These unique pieces often feature a hole so the coin could be used as jewelry.
