In both status and stature, Peter the Great was an imposing figure. Reigning over all of Russia from 1682 until his death in 1725, the Tsar stood a towering 6'8" – measuring approximately the diameter of a AAA battery, just imagine how tiny a silver wire kopek would have looked in the palm of his hand! First issued during the 14th century, these crudely minted coins were struck by taking a piece of silver wire cut to a specific weight and hammering it between two dies; by this method no two pieces are alike. The specimens we offer here were minted during Peter the Great's lifetime.
