Its very limited 750,000 circulation mintage was by far the lowest for San Francisco Mint Morgans in the first ten years of the series. Other S-mintmark Morgan issues of the time were up to 17 times as plentiful. And vastly more 1886 Philadelphia and New Orleans issues also survive today, so the 1886-S is very much the key scarcity for the date. It's estimated that as few as 55,000 may exist in our nicely detailed Very Fine quality or better.
