A silver dollar encyclopedia estimates that as few as 75,000 mint-state 1897-S Morgan dollars may survive today. This issue is also highly regarded for its excellent strikes. In 1897, total Morgan silver dollar mintages were the lowest of the late 1890s. Since 1893, the U.S. economy had languished in a depression. But major gold discoveries in the West helped revive confidence during 1897.
