1962 & 1963 Proof Set Pair — When these sets were issued no one anticipated they would be the last with Franklin silver half dollars. That series was scheduled to continue, but after the 1963 assassination of President Kennedy, it was supplanted by the new JFK type. These sets were also some of the last in the series to include 90% silver coinage. After 1964 no 90% silver coinage was included in regular proof sets. They were also some of the final sets minted in Philadelphia before proof set production was moved to San Francisco.
1973 & 1974 Proof Set Pair — Although already in circulation for two years, the new Eisenhower dollar did not make its debut in U.S. proof sets until 1973. The big Ike dollar was finally added to the cent, nickel, dime, quarter and half dollar proofs which made the 1973 set America's first-ever six-coin proof set. The sizeable Ike dollar remained in the following year's six-coin 1974 proof set. With a limited mintage of just 2.6 million, that year's set boasted the lowest output for a generation (from the span of 1961 to 1985).
1982 & 1983 Proof Set Pair — These 5-coin sets contains finest-quality proofs of all denominations for the date of issue. Included are the cent, nickel, dime, quarter and half dollar, whose circulation mintages were thousands of times higher. For example, while almost 17 billion cents were issued in 1982 for circulation, the 1982 proof set's mintage was just 3.8 million. Similar numbers held for the 1983 set. These impressive issues were struck by the San Francisco Mint, whose proofs are regarded as the best ever in American history.
